“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth!” Psalms 46:10
Being still is the challenge of our age! In this age of technology our minds are constantly occupied even when our bodies are still. In fact today the only time people seem to be still is when they are sitting listening to or looking at something on their mobile phones! However being still in the sense of Psalms 46:10, is when our minds are not occupied with earthly things but meditating and listening for God’s voice. Many times this can be done in the quiet of our homes, beside the fire or in our most comfortable chair, where as for others it might be sitting quietly and absorbing the beauty of nature that surrounds them. Unfortunately this type of being still or meditating is rarely taught or even encouraged today! When was the last time you asked someone “what are you doing” and they said being still! In reality, being still is actually being used as punishment! How many young people today remember a time when they could not talk or interact with anyone, nor read or even listen to anything as “TIME OUT”! Wow, how far we have come from this command particularly in the western world. Many eastern religions still encourage meditation, and though as Christians our focus would be different, it certainly might be a great practice for us to revive!
